Action + Tenacity = Success

With the amount of success strategies around it is easy to become overwhelmed. In fact, there are so many that lots of people spend so much time reading about the different ones that they never really get around to implementing any of them.

For me though, there are just two words that count, and once you fully understand the implied meaning behind those two words, you can hang any number of success strategies you want onto them and make them fit.

So then, what are those two words? One is action, and the other is tenacity.

Firstly, lets look at action. You need to establish what action needs to be taken and then take massive action. All out, 100% effort, no holds barred, both feet in, sort of action.

It is no good sitting at home thinking about what action needs to be taken, you need to be out there following through with it. A great quote to bear in mind is this “Every person who has ever slept knows what it is to dream. It is the person who gets out of bed and takes action on that dream who will know success”.

A friend of mine once put it to me like this – the gap between being a spectator and a player is often less than a meter wide, and the only thing that keeps a person from making the change from spectator to player is their unwillingness to make that short step from being on the fringes to being involved.

Lets now look at the second word – tenacity. If you truly want success, you are going to need terrier-like tenacity, just like a terrier who has its sights on a rabbit. When you have set your sights on success, you need to chase it for as long as is a necessary and, when you get it, you need to hang on to it and never let go.

Note though that this is not a recommendation for adopting a blinkered approach, as charging blindly towards your dream will be as likely to bring failure as it will be to bring success. You need to remain flexible and aware, as there will be more than one way of achieving the same goal, and the way you originally thought of may become blocked.

So, tenacity does not mean tunnel vision, it means being tough, resolute, staunch and steadfast. It is like determination multiplied by a hundred. Basically, it means never giving up on an opportunity that arises, and always finishing that which you have started.

A quote fits nicely in here – “Success seems to be largely a matter of holding on after others have let go”.

This means that there will always be lots of people going after the same opportunities and, normally, only a handful, maybe even just one, can succeed. If you want that to be you, then you have to keep at it longer and harder than the others that you are competing against.
